I’m 19, I’m worried I may have diabetes and I don’t have health coverage/insurance so I can’t go see a doctor. Is there a cheap way to check if you have it without having to go see a doctor?
Thanks for the tips guys but I don’t know anyone close to me who has diabetes, none of my friends got it. I don’t think anyone in my family has it so I can’t go to them for help. I’m not overweight either.

No Money? Go to the county health department. Or call your local diabetes foundation and ask them where free diabetes testing is going on in your area. Usually one is going on near you.
Good luck . Hope you have a false alarm. Diabetes is a real pain in the you know where.

Did you have to fast for the test. Also tell me what exactly what happened the day of the test. Please describe. I thank you in advance for answering.

For the one hour test, do not fast. Have a balanced breakfast- try to avoid too many carbs. In other words, don’t have a donut and coffee, instead have eggs and whole grain toast. I failed my one hour, and I think it was because I had too many carbs that morning. When you arrive you will be given a glucose drink that you must drink within five minutes. It is not delicious, but it is not that bad. You will be asked to wait one hour and then your blood will be drawn. Usually you won’t get immediate results; your doctor will call you with the results.

If you fail, you will have to do the three hour test, and that does require that you fast. For that test, you will have your blood drawn when you arrive, and you’ll be given another drink, with a higher concentration of glucose. Your blood will be drawn every hour for the next three hours. If you fail that test, you will probably be diagnosed with gestational diabetes, and your doctor will review treatment with you. I passed my three hour test, fortunately.

ETA: My doctor specifically told me not to fast, she said it can cause a false result. And when I arrived at the outpatient lab they verified that I didn’t fast.

Well two days ago i had my glucose test. Well my doctor called me today and left a message saying i need to call her back. Played phone tag and didnt end up talking to her. Well anyways it has to have something to do with the test because SHE never calls. Anyways what are some symptoms to gestational diabetes and what happens if you do have it. (so far i feel fine)

Most of the time gestational diabetics never "feel" anything. The symptoms of excessive thirst & urination are signs of diabetes in general, but they show up in someone who has had high blood sugars for a while. It’s a cumulative effect – you have to have had high blood sugars for a long time before you start showing that kind of symptom. Gestational diabetes comes on so quickly that it can start between one week of pregnancy and the next (week 28 is when it starts to show up) because of pregnancy hormones. So there’s usually not enough time to feel symptoms. Every now and then there’s someone who has the symptoms, but they’ve usually either had type 2 diabetes and didn’t know it, or they had a severe case (very high blood sugars) once it started.

or even the other way around?
when im in the car, if i text or read something i will get motion sick, but only sometimes. and, i am not diabetic, but sometimes my blood sugar will get low if i dont eat for a while.
when i get motion sick, i get dizzy and sometimes nauseous, so i will lay down to let my brain rest.
lately, when i get motion sick, after i lay down, i will get my normal low blood sugar symptoms (shaking hands and legs and sometimes dizzyness).

i would just like to know if either of these can cause the other??
best answer gets 10 points!

I get shaky and sweaty when my sugar is low. I only get nauseos if I let my sugar go way to low. So eat or else you do get sick. As for the car you do get sick if you don’t look out of the car often, but this can happen to anybody. I’m hypoglycemic by the way.

is 55/86 too high for a liver result? My doctor sent me word by his nurse, per phone, to stop taking my Cholesterol until my next visit 5/27/08,. This seems too long a wait to me because how am I going to control my cholesterol without medication?

55 / 86 – may be you mean SGPT / SGOT (ALT / AST). If that is so, it is mildly elevated, presuming the normal upper limit in the laboratory is around 40. But liver enzymes can go as high as 500 or more in simple jaundice (viral hepatitis A). Please follow your doctor’s advice as he knows your condition as well as the urgency of cholesterol control in your case. Medications for controlling cholesterol level act only slowly. So their effects will also wane out only slowly, over weeks.

I have been experiencing some signs of diabetes and i’m getting worried. I’m just wondering if it would have shown up on the blood test i got in july before i had surgery. Would they have tested my blood for that?

Likely yes, especially if you had to fast (not eat for 12 hours) before the blood test. Ask your doctor to give you a copy of your test results, and look for "Glucose". It will show your actual result, and right next to it the normal range.
Good luck!

Now I have to have more lab work for three hours. It doesn’t mean that I have gestational diabetes just yet… has anyone had elevated results the first time but came out not having GD…Please give me some good advice. Should I limit all my sugars now?

Actually 25% of women fail the one hour test. So trust me when I say you are completely not alone! I failed it, as did several of my friends. We all ended up passing the 3 hour test, and none of us had gestational diabetes issues.

I believe the statistics show that one 4% of the women who fail the 1 hour test actually fail the 3 hour test as well…. so chances are you should be fine.

Advice before your next test, is to eat well balanced meals for 3 days prior to taking the test. Make sure to eat both protein and carbs, as not having enough of either one of those can affect your blood sugar. You don’t necessarily have to limit your sugar intake, but even if you don’t have gestational diabetes, it’s best not to be eating tons of sugar while you are pregnant anyways. I ate normal meals the days before my second test and everything ended up being just fine!

Most likely you will be fine too….. but just in case you do end up testing positive for gestational diabetes, know that most of the time it can be controlled by simple diet changes, it’s rare that a case requires more drastic things such as taking insulin, etc.

Good luck and many blessings to you on a healthy pregnancy!!
