Lately I’ve found myself urinating quite oftem, very thristy, and feeling very nauseated when I have eaten something in a few hours. Could this possibly be symptons of diabetes?
Diabetes does run in the family and I just found out that two more realitives were diagnosed. They are much older though, I’m only 23. I’m hoping that I am just being paranoid.
What are the symptoms and what can I do to make sure I don’t get them if at all possible?
Go get checked if there is any doubt at all. Here are a list of symptoms. Some people don’t have any symptoms, and some people have symptoms not listed here.
Constant thirst
Frequent urination
Constant hunger
Unexplained weight gain or loss
Blurry vision
Slow healing wounds
Reoccurring yeast infection in women, itching penis in men
Frequent boils
Irritability
Headaches
Tingling sensation in arms, hands, feet or legs
Leg cramps
Watch your diet, and get daily exercise. You have a risk factor since it is in your family. Taking care of yourself now can keep diabetes at bay for awhile, but there is no way to actually prevent it. It does not matter if you are overweight or not. Diabetes causes the weight gain in many people in a lot of cases. 51% of type 2 diabetics have never been over weight and have a normal diet. Type 1 can be diagnosed from infancy to around age 30. This is the type that is insulin dependent. Type 2 is usually diagnosed after the age of 30 and is treated with oral med, insulin or both. Some people can control it for many years by diet and exercise, but it usually requires medication in later years. Type 2 is becoming more prevelant recently in grade school age kids over the last few years, and they expect a great rise in the number of people that develop it. Certain drugs, (sterioids,
cortisterioids, some blood pressure medications, certain drugs used in cancer treatment, are among some of the drugs) disease that affects the pancreas, and injury to the pancreas can also lead to or contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. There is no cure for type 2 or type 1 except pancreas transplant.

I bruise easily and was told it could be a sign of diabetes. I am only 27. Also what do doctors do to test for diabetes?
Also I get light headed sometimes, hotflashes, can go from happy to sad at times,I do urinate frequently but always have, sometimes I feel weak like I dont have energy like usual I dont know if any of these symptoms have anything to do w/ this but if I dont control my moods my husband is going to leave me. I dont know whats going on. I will get a bruise and it will take months for it to disappear. I was adopted so I dont know much about my medical history but I do know diabetes, strokes, cancer, thyroid disease runs on my bio. fathers side. I get chest pains on the left side of my chest but its hard to tell what it is from indigestion its not real intense but it is bothersome @ times.
1) Excessive thirst; constant thirst
2) Tired all the time; no amount of rest makes this better. Not enough energy to do ADL’s. I sometimes would make a batter and literally not have the energy to put it from the bowl into the pan into the oven, I was so sick, and didn’t know it. This disease totally mimics chronic fatigue syndrome.
3) Some people are hungry all the time, no matter how much they eat. Some people lose weight no matter how much they eat. Some people completely lose their appetite.
4) Extreme mood swings; emotional volatility, irritability, inability to cope w/ sometimes even the smallest problems or issues, as in literally NOT HAVING THE ENERGY TO COPE W/ SOMETHING, not wimping out.
5) Sometimes, symptoms of undiagnosed/untreated diabetes can mimic Manic-Depressive Disorder, or BPD (Bi-Polar Disorder).
6) In my own life, I have found hot flashes, anxiety attacks, "red in the face" issues, inability to deal w/ heat and humidity to be symptoms of blood sugars way too high, too.
7) Any significant changes in vision, of any kind– GO GET CHECKED OUT!
Sometimes extreme depression sometimes with no obvious causes, as in out of keeping w/ a person’s normal character.
9) Frequent urination, especially at night.
10) Craving sweets can also be a symptom.
11) The person’s breath can smell "fruity" or "pear-like".
Most medical folks will take blood to check blood sugar and will also do a test called a Hemoglobin A1-C which will tell them what your bloodsugars have be running/trending for the last 3 months/90 days or so. Some doctors will order a Glucose Tolerance Test, but if your fasting blood sugar is above I think it’s 120 now (used to be 140), your Dr. will strongly be suspecting diabetes.

Will I have to go to the hospital if I am diagnosed with type 1 diabetes? If so, what will i do there? Will they just teach me how to control my diabetes? Will they just monitor me? Will they do anything that hurts to me besides insulin injections, and checking my blood sugar?
i’m not quite sure why you’re asking this if you haven’t even been diagnosed. did your doctor tell you he suspects you have t1? there is no way that a doctor would tell you that and then simply send you home without insulin or education. you don’t even know if you have it, you don’t claim to have any symptoms, and yet you’re jumping to conclusions. take it one step at a time instead of freaking out over this. oh, and you DON’T need a catheter unless you are severely ill, unconscious, or physically unable to void on your own. stop obsessing over this…it’s not healthy!

I am doing a presentation on diabetes and I need to keep my audience entertained and informed.
What activity could I do to make a presentation about diabetes fun. I already have all the information that I need but it just seems boring especially for a bunch of 17-19 year olds. Can anyone help me? My presentation revolves around teen and adult diabetes if that helps.
Well..
I have type one diabetes and anyone who knows anyone about the disease (as I’m sure you do) knows it’s not something ‘fun’.
But of course, you don’t want to bore your audience to death.
I cannot really think of any way to make if fun, but don’t just throw facts at the audience. Use examples, tell stories, ect. I know what I’m much more interested in a more personal presentation than someone naming stupid statistics.
Wish I could be more help.
Feel free to message me if you need any info.
~Lindsey (:

My wife and I have a specialist to go to tomorrow for gestational diabetes…its our first time meeting them and my wife is 32 weeks along..what should we expect from a visit? are they going to do an ultrasound or just normal blood test and such?
Are they testing her for gestational diabetes, or does she have gestational diabetes?
If she is being tested for it, the specialist will have her drink a glucose drink which tastes kind of like a sugary soda. Your wife will have to drink the drink within 5 minutes. She must then wait an hour and then the specialist will take a blood sample to see how fast your wife’s system processes sugar.
If the reading is abnormal then your wife’s practitioner will have her come back for a three-hour glucose tolerance test to see if she really does have gestational diabetes.

My husband and I would really like to start a family soon. I have a couple of health issues. For one, I have diabetes type II and I have polisystic overies which causes me to have a super irregular period. Would anyone have any suggestions on how we could get pregnant? Thanks!
I have the same things as you do. Firstly, see your MD! Start getting both of yourselves healthy, diet, excercise, lots of water, regular sleep. Your body needs to be as healthy as possible aside from those two things. Diabetes II is very controllable based off of those things. You may need to be put on such meds as Glucophage to help with the blood sugar levels. Yor husband will also need to have his sperm tested to make sure he can produce as well. Try testing for you when you ovulate. If you are still unable to concieve, you may consider fertility drugs. Best of luck and stay healthy!

I know that Diabetes is when the body cant produce or can’t use insulin by absorbing it into the arteries. How does your weight affect this?
Being over weight increases your chance of developing type 2 diabetes-a very important distinction. Gaining weight is a trauma to the body. It actually injures it, just like an external trauma would. When you over eat continually, your body becomes resistant to the insulin your pancreas produces. Type 2 medication allows your body to effectively use the insulin your body produces.

Hello people.
I see diabetes listed as a risk factor for heart diseases and I wonder how bad it really is to have diabetes. Is it as bad as smoking? I suppose it depends on how well diabetes is controlled but I just want to get an idea of what damage high blood sugar does to you body.
Cheers.
Uncontrolled diabetes is actually WORSE than smoking cigarettes (from a cardiovascular standpoint). Having uncontrolled blood sugar is like having something the consisteny of maple syrup in your veins and arteries… this in turn causes the heart to work much harder, and it also damages the microvasculature in the body (like in the kidneys and eyes). The vascular system is in a constant state of inflammation… tiny breaks in the blood vessels occur. When this happens, the body tries to repair it by clotting, and heart attacks are usually caused when one of these clots break off and get lodged in the vasculature of the heart causing oxygen deprivation. So yeah, it’s bad.
However, if a diabetic controls their blood sugar well, they have about the same risk for heart disease that any of us do.
