My wife failed both the glucose tests she was administered a few weeks ago. We were positive she had it after she failed the extended glucose test, "Even though she wasn’t displaying any of the symptoms associated with Gestational Diabetes.". Now we have been testing her sugar levels with a one touch self testing applicator, and her numbers have been in the low 70’s. Far below what they should be for someone with gestational diabetes. What should we do now? we don’t want to disregard the doctors advice, but are skeptical of the results of their tests, and the testing method for that matter.
I’d help her stay on a low glycemic diet, even those of us without gestational diabetes who over indulge in sugar end up with too big babies and shoulder dystocia. And get your monitor checked, sometimes they can give false readings.

I was wondering whether the majority of women with gestational diabetes have to take some medication, or can it be fixed by diet and exercise?
Also – did you feel any symptoms suggesting that you may have diabetes (even before you took the glucose tolerance test)?
PS – also, were there any consequences to your baby? I.e., did your baby need glucose IV or smth after birth? How was the birth weight?
Mine was treated and managed through diet and exercise only. I had no symptoms before pregnancy. But now, 10 years later, I have pre diabetes. It’s often a precursor to future diabetes as you age.
My baby was just under 9 lbs and was healthy and fine. I was vigilant thought about following the dietician’s plan and I walked after lunch and dinner.

I’ll be 23 weeks on Monday and I have an appointment with my OB then. I thought she said I’d have to do the glucose test at that time, but she may have meant later. I wondered when you’re typically tested for gestational diabetes in pregnancy?
Also, I’ve noticed I am so thirsty lately. I know this can be a sign of diabetes. But I wondered if dry mouth/thirst is also just a symptom that some pregnant women deal with (who DON’T have diabetes)?
Thanks!
This is usually done between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy.

Well two days ago i had my glucose test. Well my doctor called me today and left a message saying i need to call her back. Played phone tag and didnt end up talking to her. Well anyways it has to have something to do with the test because SHE never calls. Anyways what are some symptoms to gestational diabetes and what happens if you do have it. (so far i feel fine)
Most of the time gestational diabetics never "feel" anything. The symptoms of excessive thirst & urination are signs of diabetes in general, but they show up in someone who has had high blood sugars for a while. It’s a cumulative effect – you have to have had high blood sugars for a long time before you start showing that kind of symptom. Gestational diabetes comes on so quickly that it can start between one week of pregnancy and the next (week 28 is when it starts to show up) because of pregnancy hormones. So there’s usually not enough time to feel symptoms. Every now and then there’s someone who has the symptoms, but they’ve usually either had type 2 diabetes and didn’t know it, or they had a severe case (very high blood sugars) once it started.
Yes, dizziness because I wasn’t eating every couple of hrs or I wasn’t eating the right foods, and thirst.
Hello, I am about 21 weeks into my pregnancy. I am 23 years old healthy over all everything is great with my health and my babys health. I did do the glucola testing and do routine urine testing and everythings fine.
I am slightly overweight and just recently started experiencing blurred vision, and I cant see too far anymore. I do wear glasses/ or contacts and have really bad vision, I have had a past history of a retinal detatchment it was lasered and taken care of when I was 17, the DR. just said to monitor it every year I have and my eye was good, but I do have afamily history of my grandparent having diabetes. I dont know if this is a pregnacy symptom or could it be gestational diabetes, or somethibg that may have to do with my previous retinal detatchement. If anyone has experienced blurred or not so great vision during there pregnancy please feel free to let me know… comments thanks! P.s. I will be going to follow up with my doctor regarding this concern. Just wanted to get some feedback from the moms and mom to be’s!
Thanks you guys are great! I am so greatful for all the women on here, that are so helpful!!!! thank you so much. I will be definitly calling my doctor and goint to my appt. this coming week.
There are actually no conclusive signs of Gestational Diabetes. Many of the classic diabetes symptoms are also normal during pregnancy. Things such as frequent urination, dry skin, hunger, fatigue, thirst, and blurred vision are common diabetes symptoms but are also quite common during pregnancy as well. I, personally, did not have vision problems during pregnancy but I do not several women who did have. Since you have past history of retinal detachment and you have corrected vision than it would not be unusual for the pregnancy to cause further vision issues. It is normally around week 24-28 when the glucose test is done to screen for Gestational Diabetes. Since you are only 21 weeks and have had the test done already that likely indicates your doctor considers you to have some higher risk factors. Since you are experiencing changes in your vision I suggest you contact your doctor’s office as soon as possible to discuss this with them. It is possible he/she will want you to come in for further testing.
