it can be at the workplace, in school, in the family, or their social life. how does diabetes affect them daily?

just adds a little more responsibility. Have to check your blood sugar and take care of yourself. If you do it won’t effect you much. As long as we take care of ourselves we can live a completely normal life! also it’s smart to inform friends/family/co-workers/etc. that we have it.

My doc used urinalysis to diagnose a urinary tract infection and she mentioned that glucose was also present. I will go back for blood tests. I do have a family history of diabetes. So I borrowed my father’s glucose meter and tested my blood –glucose level was only 99, which is not in the diabetic range.

The kidney infection (in fact, ANY infection) WILL cause you blood sugars to be high, and THAT could have caused the sugar to spill into your urine,

This is NOT a problem — UNLESS it continues after the kidney infection is healed.

You doctor will do ANOTHER urine test before you are "released" as being "well",. IF the sugar STILL shows up then, you have other problems to look into.

I know some people can control their diabetes through diet, but I don’t know what that classifies as. Also is Hypoglycemic in the same category of diabetes?

Hi, I’ve never heard of Type A or Type B. The actual terms are Type I or Type II. Type I diabetics typically are required to take insulin. This is where the insulin is not made in the pancreas.

Most Type II (Or adult-onset) diabetics can maintain their blood sugars with a combination of medication, changing eating patterns, and exercise. Type II’s are usually resistant to insulin. Some Type II folks also have to take insulin. I guess you could call that Type III.

Hypoglycemic is a term related to diabetes of where you have lower blood sugar than normal. Hyperglycemic would mean you have a higher blood sugar count than normal.
For example, if normal blood readings are 80-120 and your readings are on average 180+ then you are hyper. If less than 80 then hypo. The issue when you have low sugar is this can cause some other issues you don’t want.

I’m thirteen years old almost fourteen i have had diabetes since i was eight years old. I still haven’t started my period. My mom says its proably because i have diabetes. When you have type 1 you have to take insulin which is a hormone. So she says it can affect all of my other hormones and my growth. But im really wondering is this true?

I personally don’t know if it’s true or not, I haven’t heard anything about that. But you shouldn’t assume the delay is due to your diabetes. I knew a girl who didn’t start until she was 16, and she didn’t have any medical problems. Some girls just start late.

I know someone that occasionally has problems swallowing when he is eating. It makes him feel like he is about to choke, as the food doesn’t go down. He is a diabetic. Is diabetes a contributing factor if someone is having a hard time swallowing?

It could be….Diabetes either type 1 or 2 will effect body systems and organs depending on the individual depending on how that particular system or organ is susceptible to increased sugar, ….when it comes to diabetes it may be very serious or very mild but it is a progressive disease……It is known to damage the esophagus of many diabetics, (though not common).

A young mother of 24 yrs is having diabetes and she has to take insulin daily. What is the best ayurvedic, dietary or natural remedy for her? As she has to care for her baby all through the day, she is unable to do any exercise.

Diabetes canNOT be cured. it can only be CONTROLLED.

Since she is taking insulin, we are not clear if she is a Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetic. Treatment will be based on what type of diabetic she is.

Type 1 Diabetes is characterized by a complete failure of the pancreas. This most often happens in children uner the age of 18, but it is not uncommon for young adults as old as 30 to get it. Type 2 Diabetes can also turn into Type1, after many years of poor treatment.

Type 2 Diabetes is caused by being overweight. This is most common in adults over 40, but with society’s ways of eating wrong foods and failing to get exercise, Type 2 Diabetes is now showing up in children as young as 9 years old!

And Type 2 Diabetes is VERY common if the mother had Gestational Diabetes while pregnant. In fact, a woman who has Gestational Diabetes is more than twice as likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes later in life.

There is only ONE treatment for Type 1 Diabetes — insulin shots. Since the body produces NO insulin, the shots are necessary, or she will die. The ONLY alternative is a risky, painful, and expensive pancreas transplant.

Type 2 diabetes can often be controlled through diet and exercise.

The Type 2 Diabetes MUST COMPLETELY ELIMINATE sugar from their diet. They can have NO sugar. That means no colas, sports drinks, energy drinks, canned fruit juices, candies, cakes, ice cream, pudding, doughnuts, cookies — ANYTHING with sugar MUST be ELIMINATED from the diet.

The patient MUST reduce the amounts of starches they eat. Eat fewer breads, crackers, pastas, rice, corn, and potatoes. It really help to get a Diabetic Cookbook, and learn what foods are starchy and what food are healthy.

And the patient MUST get more exercise. "She has to care for her baby" is just an excuse. if she does not get more exercise she is going to be hospitalized, limtied to a wheelchair or nursing home, or die — any of the three will leave her baby with NO care, and dying will leave the baby without a mother.

You could do her a great service by getting off the internet and volunteering to take care of the baby while she exercises!

THERE IS NO CURE FOR DIABETES. IF she can develop the self-discipline to change her eating habits and lifestyle, then the diabetes can be CONTROLLED, and she will live as long and as happy as a healthy perseon.

But for the rest of her life, the diabetes will still be inside her, just waiting for her to change her diet or forget to exercise. then, the diabetes will come back, and usually stronger and more viscious than before. the results can be heart attacks, strokes, blindness, amputation, kidney failure and dialysis — even death!

I had a fasting glucose test in late 2006 which returned normal. I went back to the doctor this week and he recommended I retest every 1.5 years to monitor that until I bring certain risk factors under control. Is it possible to go from normal to full blown diabetes in a year?

Type two diabetes is generally pretty slow to progress. A lot depends on your diet and lifestyle. For me, it took years after the symptoms presented for my doctor to pronounce me, "diabetic".

Yes, it’s possible, but not likely. If it’s a concern, just learn all you can about preventing it by visiting my diabetes info page:
http://www.geocities.com/seabulls69/Type_II_Diabetes.html

BTW, It also has taken years for me to reverse the process to where I no longer have to take medication.

Lately I’ve found myself urinating quite oftem, very thristy, and feeling very nauseated when I have eaten something in a few hours. Could this possibly be symptons of diabetes?

Diabetes does run in the family and I just found out that two more realitives were diagnosed. They are much older though, I’m only 23. I’m hoping that I am just being paranoid.

What are the symptoms and what can I do to make sure I don’t get them if at all possible?

Go get checked if there is any doubt at all. Here are a list of symptoms. Some people don’t have any symptoms, and some people have symptoms not listed here.

Constant thirst
Frequent urination
Constant hunger
Unexplained weight gain or loss
Blurry vision
Slow healing wounds
Reoccurring yeast infection in women, itching penis in men
Frequent boils
Irritability
Headaches
Tingling sensation in arms, hands, feet or legs
Leg cramps

Watch your diet, and get daily exercise. You have a risk factor since it is in your family. Taking care of yourself now can keep diabetes at bay for awhile, but there is no way to actually prevent it. It does not matter if you are overweight or not. Diabetes causes the weight gain in many people in a lot of cases. 51% of type 2 diabetics have never been over weight and have a normal diet. Type 1 can be diagnosed from infancy to around age 30. This is the type that is insulin dependent. Type 2 is usually diagnosed after the age of 30 and is treated with oral med, insulin or both. Some people can control it for many years by diet and exercise, but it usually requires medication in later years. Type 2 is becoming more prevelant recently in grade school age kids over the last few years, and they expect a great rise in the number of people that develop it. Certain drugs, (sterioids,
cortisterioids, some blood pressure medications, certain drugs used in cancer treatment, are among some of the drugs) disease that affects the pancreas, and injury to the pancreas can also lead to or contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. There is no cure for type 2 or type 1 except pancreas transplant.

I bruise easily and was told it could be a sign of diabetes. I am only 27. Also what do doctors do to test for diabetes?
Also I get light headed sometimes, hotflashes, can go from happy to sad at times,I do urinate frequently but always have, sometimes I feel weak like I dont have energy like usual I dont know if any of these symptoms have anything to do w/ this but if I dont control my moods my husband is going to leave me. I dont know whats going on. I will get a bruise and it will take months for it to disappear. I was adopted so I dont know much about my medical history but I do know diabetes, strokes, cancer, thyroid disease runs on my bio. fathers side. I get chest pains on the left side of my chest but its hard to tell what it is from indigestion its not real intense but it is bothersome @ times.

1) Excessive thirst; constant thirst
2) Tired all the time; no amount of rest makes this better. Not enough energy to do ADL’s. I sometimes would make a batter and literally not have the energy to put it from the bowl into the pan into the oven, I was so sick, and didn’t know it. This disease totally mimics chronic fatigue syndrome.
3) Some people are hungry all the time, no matter how much they eat. Some people lose weight no matter how much they eat. Some people completely lose their appetite.
4) Extreme mood swings; emotional volatility, irritability, inability to cope w/ sometimes even the smallest problems or issues, as in literally NOT HAVING THE ENERGY TO COPE W/ SOMETHING, not wimping out.
5) Sometimes, symptoms of undiagnosed/untreated diabetes can mimic Manic-Depressive Disorder, or BPD (Bi-Polar Disorder).
6) In my own life, I have found hot flashes, anxiety attacks, "red in the face" issues, inability to deal w/ heat and humidity to be symptoms of blood sugars way too high, too.
7) Any significant changes in vision, of any kind– GO GET CHECKED OUT!
8) Sometimes extreme depression sometimes with no obvious causes, as in out of keeping w/ a person’s normal character.
9) Frequent urination, especially at night.
10) Craving sweets can also be a symptom.
11) The person’s breath can smell "fruity" or "pear-like".

Most medical folks will take blood to check blood sugar and will also do a test called a Hemoglobin A1-C which will tell them what your bloodsugars have be running/trending for the last 3 months/90 days or so. Some doctors will order a Glucose Tolerance Test, but if your fasting blood sugar is above I think it’s 120 now (used to be 140), your Dr. will strongly be suspecting diabetes.

INSULIN FASTING Blood Tests

This test is used for insulin measurement in the evaluation of individuals with fasting hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. High fasting insulin is a sign of insulin resistance and the start of type II diabetes or syndrome X
